Parking is available in the neighborhood off Cliff Drive. As typical for these Laguna Coves, arrive early for best parking spots, especially on weekends. Access is via a paved trail down to the middle of the beach. At high tide, open, dry regions of sand can be limited at well. There is no restroom or drinking fountain facilities at this beach.
Snorkel Shaw's Cove
Both the West and East sides of the cove harbor interesting structures with eel grass and kelp nearby. I've found the West portion to tend to be more clear, better visibility and less choppy at times. The water drops off rapidly as you round the points. The region closer to the shore seems to have the most fish, hiding amongst the grass and rocks.
On my first trip to Shaw's, I was surprised at the sheer number of fish. Baitfish in particular were in abdundance. It's comparable to La Jolla cove, perhaps even better in terms of the variety of fish (less Garibaldi, more of other speciesa). The opal eye are particularily large, as you can see in the video to the side.
It's also a popular beach for bodysurfing, thanks to the shorebreak. Caution is advised getting past it for snorkeling; even the smaller waves can easily knock one off their feet!
Additional Information
Shaw's cove is a yet another example of the fine snorkeling available in Laguna Beach. If parking is too difficult, snorkelers may consider Diver's Cove, Fisherman's Cove, or Crescent Bay; all within a fairly short distance.
